The synthesis of the title guanine [cf. (VI), (VII)] and 2-aminopurine derivatives [cf. (VIII), (IX)], potential prodrugs of the potent and selective herpes virus inhibitor penciclovir, based on the coupling of 6-chloropurine (V) with cyclic ketals of type (IV) is accomplished.
