ChemInform Abstract

A convenient, high yielding enantioselective synthesis of (R)-(-)-carnitine (IV) starting from glycerol is reported. The chiral information is introduced into (I) by reaction with the Oppolzer chiral sulfonamide (II). The synthesis is applicable on a large scale process and the chiral auxiliary can be completely recovered.
