ChemInform Abstract

Metallic cadmium, produced in situ by reduction of CdCl2 with samarium metal, efficiently promotes the reaction of aldehydes with allylic and propargyl bromides (II) to give the corresponding homoallylic or homopropargyl alcohols (III) (10 examples). The metallic cadmium also promotes the coupling of aromatic aldehydes to pinacols [→(IV)/(V)].
