ChemInform Abstract

Homogeneous, single-phase samples of the title compounds are prepared by melting mixtures of the elements under high purity argon followed by annealing at 1050 °C (15 d). The isotypic compounds crystallize in a new monoclinic structure type, space group I2/m (Z = 2). Resistivity, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements reveal that the Ce atoms in Ce4Co2Sn5 order magnetically with a Neel temperature of 4 K. A ferromagnetic component in the isothermal magnetization is found in both Ce4Co2Sn5 and La4Co2Sn5 even at 300 K.
