The synthesis of chiral bicyclodecanone (VIII), a potentially useful building block for the synthesis of taxoids, by chemoselective 1,2-addition of allylzinc bromide to the aldehyde moiety of camphor derivative (I), SmI2 promoted cyclization of its acetate derivative (V), and following fragmentation of the tricyclic alcohol (VII) formed is reported.
