A stereoselective conjugate addition procedure is used for synthesis of novel non-peptidic matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors. The novel compounds of type (VIII) contain a sulfonamidomethylene group besides a cyclopentyl group which increases the desired activity and the oral bioavailability.
