ChemInform Abstract

Two different approaches to the pyrroloindole skeleton are known but the initial compounds are difficult to obtain. To circumvent these difficulties methylindole (I) is used as starting compound which is readily acetylated at the 2-position. Reaction of (III) with phosphonium bromide (IV) affords the title compound (V) in an acceptable yield. Treatment of (V) with butyllithium almost quantitatively yields the corresponding lithium salt.
