A regioselective alkylation of the (E)-sulfones (I) with high (E)-selectivity is achieved by treatment with BuLi in THF in the presence of small amounts of HMPA. The products (III) undergo intramolecular [4 + 3] cycloadditions in the presence of TiCl4.
