4-Substituted 2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxathiolanes (I) and (IV) react with AlMe3 at the secondary carbinol center to yield the primary alcohols (III) and (V). The steric course of the methylation with the endo- and exo-isomer (VI) and (VII) suggests that the complexation of the S=O group with (II) is essential for the success of the reaction.
