ChemInform Abstract

Two series of quaternary cluster phases containing M4Br3+ ions (M: Na—Cs) are prepared by reactions of MBr, Zr, ZrBr4, and an interstitial Z element (Z = Be, B, H, Mn) in Ta containers at 850 °C. The tetragonal (Cs4Br)Zr6Br16B (Pr4r21 m, Z = 2) contains a new type of puckered Zr6Br16 layers with Cs4Br3+ in tunnels normal to the layers. (K4Br)2Zr6Br18B crystallizes in the cubic space group Fmr3rm with Z = 4 (inverse fluorite type).
