ChemInform Abstract

Nanoscale metal particles of Mo, Nb, Ta, Fe-Mo, Fe-Nb, and Cu-Nb, prepared by reduction of the corresponding metal chloride or mixture of chlorides with (K+(15-crown-5)2)Na- in Me2O solution, are useful as precursors for the preparation of transition metal nitrides by heating under flowing N2(g) or NH3(g). Besides γ-Mo2N, Mo2N, Ta2N5, Fe3Mo3N, and a mixture of niobium nitride phases, a novel green Ba-Nb- N compound is obtained by heating a mixture of Ba2N2 with Nb nanoparticles under flowing N2 at 720 °C. This compound crystallizes with monoclinic symmetry as shown by the powder XRD data.
