ChemInform Abstract

The novel combustion synthesis technique for the production of red- emitting Cr3+-doped Y3Al5O12 and Eu3+-doped Y2O3 phosphors involves the reaction of metal nitrates as oxidizers and an organic fuel (urea, carbohydrazide, or glycine) at 500 °C. The luminescence of the as-synthesized powders increases upon post-reaction heat treatments up to 1600 °C probably due to removal of carbon impurities and improvement of the Cr3+ site symmetry. The control of the brightness of the phosphors by the processing conditions is discussed.
