As part of a program aimed at the functionalizing of the bridging chain of m-cyclophanes, a new approach to seven-membered ring-fused indole derivatives through NBS-bromination of the m-cyclophane-lactam ( I) is discovered. Interestingly, the Boc-protected educt (VII) leads to a single product (VIII) brominated at the benzylic position.
