ChemInform Abstract

The sinterability of AlN ceramics containing CaO and Y2O3 + CaO additives is improved by addition of small amounts of Li2O. The AlN- Y2O3-CaO system containing 1 mol.% Li2O is densified after 2 h firing at 1600 °C. In the temp. range 1300-1600 °C Li2O is removed by vaporization which results in a decrease from ≈ 0.3 wt.% to 2 ppm after firing at 1600 °C for 2 h. AlN ceramics containing a combination of Y2O3, CaO, and Li2O as sintering aids and fired 6 h at 1600 °C exhibit a thermal conductivity of 135 W. times.m-1K-1 and a microstructure with grains of < 1.5 μm particle size.
