ChemInform Abstract

A 6-endo-trig cyclization of the epoxy alcohol (VI), derived from Sharpless epoxidation of (V), leads to the title cyclohexanol (VII). The alternative 5-membered ring system is not formed. The structure of (VII) is determined by conversion into a known compound. The usefulness of (VII) is shown by its transformation to the carbocyclic sugar derivative (IX).
