Mild dehydrofluorination of the ester (I) followed by careful hydrolysis of the resulting acrylate (II) provides a new metastable enol (III). The latter is a valuable building block for the preparation of α-difluoromethyl substituted α-hydroxy and . alpha.-amino acids.
