ChemInform Abstract

A white solid solution of the title compound is prepared from the oxides in 6 N HCl, calcination at 800 °C and firing of the compressed powder at 1200 °C. Studies of the luminescence properties as a function of the Tb3+ concentration show a decrease of the ratio of 5D3/5D4 emission intensity with increasing Yb3+ concentration. Under UV excitation a maximum of the emission intensity of Tb3+ is reached near x < 0.9, whereas on cathode ray excitation, concentration quenching is found for x > 0.3. The mechanism of concentration quenching is discussed in terms of energy migration between Tb3+ at the nearest neighbor sites and self quenching of Tb3+ due to exchange interaction via TaO7 and TaO8 polyhedra.
