ChemInform Abstract

By precision flexural tests on four 9 mol% Ce-doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline samples of different grain sizes the elastic modulus, the non-linear deflection, and the associated acoustic emission are determined. The onset of plastic deformation is shown to depend on the grain size. The deformation is characterized in terms of the number and size of the transformation bands developing during the non-linear response. A linear relationship between the sum of the band widths and the residual deflection is shown to exist for the coarser grained materials. The nonlinear behavior of fine grained samples without transformation bands may be attributed to a ferro-elastic grain re-orientation.
