Treatment of the aminonitriles (I) and (VIII) with β-ketoesters or malonates in the presence of stoichiometric amounts of SnCl4 leads to the title compounds, which are of particular interest in medicinal chemistry. 4-Aminopyridones and 4-aminoquinolones can also be prepared by cyclization of amides of type (VI) and (XII).
