With a view to their interesting pharmacological properties the title compounds such as (IX), (XIII) and (XVI) are synthesized using a Michael addition reaction of hydroxyurea or methylhydrazine to an . alpha.,β-unsaturated ester such as (I) or (XIV) as the key step. ( IX) and (XIIIa) are potent although nonselective M1 partial agonists.
