ChemInform Abstract

Single crystals of the title compound are prepared by solid state reaction of BaS, Sc, Ag, and S (1:1:1:2 ratio; evacuated silica tube; 400 °C, 12 h; 500 °C, 24 h; 700 °C, 24 h; 1000 . degree.C, 6 d). BaSc3AgS6 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with Z = 8. The structure consists of a three-dimensional framework of Sc-S and Ag-S polyhedra building one-dimensional channels which are occupied by Ba2+ ions. Sc3+ shows octahedral sulfur coordination while the Ag+ ions exhibit both sqaure-pyramidal and trigonal-pyramidal coordination.
