ChemInform Abstract

Propanoic acid (I) is selectively chlorinated to 2-chloropropanoic acid (II) in the presence of ClSO3H as catalyst and O2 as radical trapping agent. 2,2- and 2,3-dichloropropanoic acids are formed as by- products. The stepwise catalyst addition leads to the highest yields of (II), since ClSO3H is decomposed in the reaction milieu via sulfopropanoic acid as intermediate. The kinetics of the reaction is studied, and a reaction mechanism is proposed.
