ChemInform Abstract

Keys step in the synthesis of the title compound is the cyclization of the optically active triketides (II) and (V). Deprotection of the ethers (VII) gives the diols (VIII); the isomers (IX) are prepared in the same way. Product (VIIIa) is proved to be identical with the natural onchitriol II. However, neither (IXb) (proposed structure) nor (VIIIb), (IXa) correspond to natural onchitriol I.
