The intramolecular alkylation of N-substituted 3-hydroxypyrrole-2- carboxylate esters (cf. (III)) is successfully applied to the synthesis of (.+-.)-slaframine (IX). Both products (IV) and (V), when treated in an analogous manner, afford a single ketone (VI). The attempt to prepare slaframine via treatment of the mesylate (VIIIb) with NaN3 occurs, however, with retention of the configuration and epi- slaframine (X) is obtained instead.
