ChemInform Abstract

The reaction of (I) with 2 equiv. of NaCN affords the lactam (III) ( all yields given in g), whereas (IV) is obtained by using one equivalent NaCN. Reaction mechanisms are proposed. Acid treatment of ( III) yields different lactone derivatives (VI) depending on the applied reaction conditions. In contrast, no lactones are formed from ( IV) and (V) under the same conditions.
