ChemInform Abstract

The synthesis of the new title compounds is achieved by reacting the Ln metals (Ln: La-Nd) with LnCl3, sulfur, and NaN3 at 850 °C (7 d, evacuated quartz-tube) in the presence of excess LnCl3 or NaCl as fluxing agent. Single crystal XRD data are reported for La4NS3Cl3 ( hexagonal, space group P63mc, Z = 2). Powder XRD data for the compounds with Ln: Ce-Nd confirm that the compounds are isostructural. The structure, which is analogous to that of Ba4OCl6, contains two crystallographically independent Ln3+ cations with coordination numbers of 10 and 8, respectively. The main structural feature is a hexagonal closest packing of “isolated” ((N3-)(Ln3+)4) tetrahedra. The S2- and Cl- anions providing charge balance are not distinguishable by XRD.
