ChemInform Abstract

The Chevrel phases Li3Mo6X8, Li3.8Mo6X8, and Li4Mo6X8 (X: Se, S) are studied by 7Li NMR at 16 and 117 MHz and various temperatures. The formation of lithium clusters with partial charge transfer to the host lattice, short Li-Li distances, and remaining electron density in the 2s orbitals is observed for Li3Mo6X8 and Li3.8Mo6X8. In these phases the intercalated lithium exhibits metallike behavior and a high mobility. By contrast, the intercalated lithium is completely ionized in Li4Mo6X8 and the lithium mobility in this phase is low.
