ChemInform Abstract

Single crystals of both the title oxomolybdates, obtained by heating intimate mixtures of the oxides (Cu2O:Sm2O3 or Gd2O3:MoO3 = 1:1:2; Cu ampoule; argon atmosphere; 950 °C, 24 h), belong to the orthorhombic space group Pbca with Z = 8. Their structure is of the CuYMo2O8 type, with tetrahedral surrounding of the Mo6+ ions. The lanthanoid ions are coordinated to eight O2- forming a quadratic antiprism, while the Cu(I) ions are surrounded by three O2- in a trigonal-planar arrangement.
