Coupling of the polyhydroxylated acetophenones (I) with the benzoate ( II) yields the 1,3-propanedione derivatives (III) which undergo acid- catalyzed ring closure to form the desired flavones (IV) upon heating. At lower temperatures, cyclization yields the silylated derivatives (V) .
