ChemInform Abstract

The fluorine-containing benzoates of 5-alkoxytropolones (Ia-c) monotropically exhibit the smectic A phase, while some of the fluorine- free equivalents do the nematic phase. However, 5-alkoxy-2(4- alkoxycarbonyl-2,3,4,5-tetrafluorophenoxy)tropones such as (II) are not mesogenic.
