The cyclopentylpyrimidinedione (I) is converted into the iodo and bromovinyl derivatives (IIa) and (IIb) as outlined in the reaction scheme. Consecutive protection of (II), substitution reaction with sodium azide (IX), and detritylation yield the azides (XI) which are reduced, forming the 3′-amino-2′,3′-dideoxynucleosides (XII).
