ChemInform Abstract

The title pyrone (I) is refluxed with the benzaldehydes (II) to produce the dipyranylphenylmethanes (III). Similar reaction of (I) with triethyl orthoformate (IV) also yields the double condensation product (VI). The intermediate (V) cannot be trapped. However, when (I) and (IV) are heated in the presence of urea (VII), the ureidomethylenepyrandione (VII) is formed probably due to coupling of ( V) with (VII). (Detailed mechanistic discussion).
