ChemInform Abstract

Cupric chloride mediated addition of bromoform to terminal olefins gives saturated tribromides such as (III). Heating with sodium nitrite results in formation of 3-alkylisoxazoles [cf. (IV)]. Hydrogenolysis of (IVc) yields the ω-formyl keto ester (V) which is reductively converted to the lipoic acid derivative (VI) using a known procedure.
