The ketones (III), which are hardly accessible by the hitherto known procedures, may serve as synthons in the preparation of various N- heterocycles. The choice of the organo-magnesium reagent is cruciable for reasonable yields of the desired products. On acid-catalyzed hydrolysis they afford the β-diketones (IV) in high yields.
