ChemInform Abstract

A commercial, poorly crystallized, high-purity YBa2Cu4O8 (124) powder is annealed in flowing oxygen at 800 °C for 40 h. This thermal treatment is found to substantially improve the crystallinity and phase purity of the material. A bulk density of 85% of the theoretical density is achieved by sintering a powder compact of the 124 phase at 850 °C in flowing oxygen (1 atm). The sintered material exhibits a bulk Tc of 77 K and a granular Tc of 82 K.
