Abstract
The dihydroxy-unit side-chain of the biologically active title compound (X) is stereoselectively synthesized from (I) via successive lactonization, oxidation and reduction of the key intermediate (Z)-(II) yielding derivatives (-)-(IV) and (V).

The dihydroxy-unit side-chain of the biologically active title compound (X) is stereoselectively synthesized from (I) via successive lactonization, oxidation and reduction of the key intermediate (Z)-(II) yielding derivatives (-)-(IV) and (V). The mixture of the latter compounds is converted into (+)-(IX), which is a precursor of (X).
