Abstract
The ester (I) reacts with chromium hexacarbonyl (II) to form the arenechromium carbonyl complex (III), which is deprotonated and then alkylated with (IV), producing the 2-arylbutanoate complex (V).

The ester (I) reacts with chromium hexacarbonyl (II) to form the arenechromium carbonyl complex (III), which is deprotonated and then alkylated with (IV), producing the 2-arylbutanoate complex (V). This is demetalated by oxidation and subsequently saponified to yield the title compound (VI). Reaction of (III) with methyl iodide (VII) gives a 1:1 mixture of the mono- (VII) and the dimethylated complex (IX).
