ChemInform Abstract

The 2-bromo-3-hydroxypyridines (I) are coupled with the Zn/Ni reagent, prepared in situ from zinc powder and NiCl2, in the presence of triphenylphosphine to produce the title compounds (II). The analogous one-step procedure leading to the 2,2'-biquinoline (IV) proceeds only with poor yield due to solubility and separation problems. An alternative way starting with the methoxy derivative (V) yields the biquinoline (VI) which gives (IV) by HI-mediated demethylation.
