ChemInform Abstract

Dimethylhydrazones, e.g. (IIIa), undergo cyclization to give mixtures of the title imidazoles such as (IVa) and (Va). The product ratio is influenced by the reaction conditions. In contrast, hydrazones of type (I) only react to afford 5-trifluoromethylimidazoles. Extension of the thermal cyclization reaction to hydrazones which bear a -CO-Ph or -CO-COOEt instead of the -CO-CF3 group is possible.
