Abstract

The aldehydes (I) are treated with a low valent titanium agent, generated from titanium tetrachloride and zinc copper couple, in DME/methylene chloride to produce the diols (II).

ChemInform Abstract

The aldehydes (I) are treated with a low valent titanium agent, generated from titanium tetrachloride and zinc copper couple, in DME/methylene chloride to produce the diols (II). Mixed coupling reactions of (Ia) with (Ib) or of (Ib) with the carbonyl derivatives (IV) are also performed. Optimum yields are obtained when the reactants are slowly added to the reducing mixture.
