Abstract

Methyl phenethyl ketone (I) is coupled with various olefinic compounds, e.g. (II), (IV), (VII), (IX), or (XI), in the presence of samarium diiodide to yield tertiary methyl phenethyl carbinols, e.g. (III), (V), (VI), (VIII), (X), and (XII).

ChemInform Abstract

Methyl phenethyl ketone (I) is coupled with various olefinic compounds, e.g. (II), (IV), (VII), (IX), or (XI), in the presence of samarium diiodide to yield tertiary methyl phenethyl carbinols, e.g. (III), (V), (VI), (VIII), (X), and (XII). The indanone (XIII) reacts similarly with styrene (IIa), forming the alcohol (XIV).
