ChemInform Abstract

Methylation of caprolactam (I) with dimethyl sulfate (II) produces the 2-methoxyazepine derivative (III). The oxime (V) is obtained by reaction of (III) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (IV). Direct reaction of (I) with (IV) in water/methanol leads also to the formation of (V), but in this case, the product cannot be isolated in pure form.
