Abstract
Thermolysis of the N-(oxoalkadienyl)indoles (III) or (VIII) results in intramolecular cycloaddition reaction, yielding the pyridocarbazoles (IV) or (IX).

Thermolysis of the N-(oxoalkadienyl)indoles (III) or (VIII) results in intramolecular cycloaddition reaction, yielding the pyridocarbazoles (IV) or (IX). The urea derivative (XIII) cyclizes in a similar manner, forming the pyrimidocarbazoles (XIV).
