Abstract

A rule is formulated to relate the concerted changes in the effects of substituents in the substrate, the leaving group, and the attacking nucleophile to the change in mechanism.

ChemInform Abstract

A rule is formulated to relate the concerted changes in the effects of substituents in the substrate, the leaving group, and the attacking nucleophile to the change in mechanism. The reaction shown in the scheme and studied for 43 further examples proceeds by a SN2 mechanism which is not far from the SN1 limit.
