ChemInform Abstract

A sixfold alkyl chain extension, yielding (IV), is achieved in one step. The Fe(II) center of (IV) can be reduced electrochemically or with Na/Hg in THF with complete reversibility. (IV) is stable against oxidation, on reaction with bromine 14 stereoisomers of (VIa) are obtained. The derivative (VIc), showing sugarlike behavior, can be acylated with Ph-CO-Cl or Pr-CO-Cl to give the corresponding hexaesters (35 or 70% yield). Decomplexation of (VIc), analogous to that of (IV), gives the insoluble hexaalcohol in 76% yield.
