Mannich cyclization of the tetrahydroisoquinolines (I), (V), or (VII) yields p- and/or o-cyclization products as shown in the reaction scheme.

Mannich cyclization of the tetrahydroisoquinolines (I), (V), or (VII) yields p- and/or o-cyclization products as shown in the reaction scheme. The N-methyl derivative (X) is obtained from the bromodimethoxybenzyl compound (IX) under the same conditions.
