ChemInform Abstract

On treatment with Fe2(CO)9 (III) the oxabicycloheptene derivative (II) is complexed to give (IV) and successively a series of related complex compounds. Depending on the conditions the proportions of these vary. (VIIb) is formed from (VIIa) by hydrolysis. (V) undergoes deoxygenation of the oxabicycloheptene moiety under different conditions to give (VII) (53-63% yield); in MeOH a concurrent regioselective methoxycarbonylation takes place leading to (VIII) (4.4-16%). Oxidative removal of the Fe(CO)3 group from (VII) and (VIII) did not afford the expected o-quinodimethane derivatives but leads to CO insertion yielding (IXa) and (X), thus opening a simple method for the synthesis of rare substituted 2-indanones. This method to prepare a 2-indanone by oxidation with Ce(IV) is already known from the reaction of (VIIc) to give (IXb).
