(dependence of the elimination rates of the erythro isomers (Ib) on the electron-withdrawing ability of the leaving group; decreasing Z:E ratios from 100:0 to 54:46; no dependence on the stereochemical nature of (Ia); (E1cB) mechanism for the reactions of (Ia) and erythro-(Ib); concerted process for threo-(Ib)).
