Abstract

Freshly prepared cyclooctatrienyldilithium (I) reacts with a large excess of dry ice (II) to give a mixture of the dicarboxylic acids (III) and (IV).

Freshly prepared cyclooctatrienyldilithium (I) reacts with a large excess of dry ice (II) to give a mixture of the dicarboxylic acids (III) and (IV). (IV), which equilibrates with (V), is esterified with diazomethane (VI) to give the dicarboxylates (VII) and (VIII). Treatment of (VII) with ironpentacarbonyl (IX) yields the complex (X).
