Abstract
The vinylindoles (I) react with N-phenylmaleimide (II) to give the carbazoles (III) with predominance of the endo-isomer.

The vinylindoles (I) react with N-phenylmaleimide (II) to give the carbazoles (III) with predominance of the endo-isomer. (IV) undergoes a dehydrogenative Diels-Alder reaction under the same conditions.
